Project Overview
The Route 40 Transit-Plus Multimodal Corridor Project is a Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) initiative designed to modernize Seattle’s busiest districts. The project improves safety, accessibility, and mobility for pedestrians, cyclists, transit riders, and motorists through upgraded streetscapes, utility infrastructure, and traffic systems. Located within Seattle’s Fremont neighborhood, the improvements support more reliable transit service while enhancing multimodal transportation along a heavily traveled urban corridor.
Transcon-specific scope of work
Transcon provided underground electrical infrastructure, illumination and traffic signal improvements along King County Metro’s Route 40 corridor in Seattle’s Westlake, Fremont and Ballard neighborhoods. The scope included five new traffic signals upgrades to seven existing traffic signals and new illumination.
Construction was performed within one of Seattle’s most heavily traveled corridors, requiring careful coordination to maintain safe pedestrian and vehicular access throughout the project. Additional challenges included the installation of deep foundations reaching approximately 25 feet below grade while working within a congested urban environment containing existing utilities. Through careful planning, sequencing, and coordination with project stakeholders, Transcon successfully delivered our work while minimizing impacts to the surrounding community.
